How to spot Greenwashing in activewear

How to Spot Greenwashing in Yoga and Activewear: 10 Questions Every Conscious Shopper Should Ask

The activewear industry is full of words like eco, sustainable, planet friendly, plastic free, and conscious. While many brands are making genuine progress, others rely on marketing claims that sound impressive but reveal very little about what is actually inside their products or how they are made.

As consumers, we deserve transparency, not vague promises.

Here are ten questions that can help you identify whether a yoga or activewear brand is genuinely committed to sustainability or simply greenwashing.

1. Do they tell you exactly what the fabric is made from?

Many brands use terms such as natural fibres or plant based without providing the full fibre composition.

If a garment contains elastane or other synthetic fibres, ask the brand to clearly explain what percentage is natural and what percentage is synthetic. Full transparency allows consumers to make informed choices.

A trustworthy brand clearly states every fibre used and its percentage.

2. Do they claim to be plastic free?

This is becoming an increasingly common marketing claim.

If a garment contains polyester, nylon, acrylic or conventional elastane, it is not plastic free. If a brand uses biodegradable or specially designed stretch fibres, they should provide evidence to support any environmental claims.

Always ask for transparency rather than relying on headlines.

3. What about the elastane?

Most leggings contain between 10 and 30 percent conventional elastane, which is petroleum based and can contribute to persistent microplastic pollution at the end of its life.

If a brand talks extensively about organic cotton but says nothing about the elastane, it is worth asking why.

4. Are all components disclosed?

A garment is much more than fabric.

Ask whether the dyes, sewing threads, labels, prints, waistbands and trims have also been considered.

True circular design looks at the entire product, not just the main fabric.

5. Do they explain which dyes are used?

Many brands proudly mention organic fibres while remaining silent about the dyes and chemical processes used.

Yet dyes are one of the most important aspects of product safety for both people and the environment.

Transparency about dyes is a strong indicator of genuine commitment.

6. Are their claims independently verified?

Words alone are not enough.

Look for recognised third party certifications rather than self declared sustainability statements.

Independent certification provides far greater confidence than marketing copy.

7. Do they explain what happens at the end of the product’s life?

Many brands focus only on recycled content.

Far fewer explain what happens when the garment is no longer wearable.

Can it safely return to nature?

Can it be recycled into new products?

Or will it simply end up in landfill?

A circular product should have a clearly defined end of life.

8. Is there evidence behind their environmental claims?

Be cautious of phrases such as:

  • Eco friendly
  • Planet positive
  • Sustainable
  • Better for the environment
  • Plastic free
  • Non toxic

These statements should always be supported by measurable evidence, recognised certifications or detailed explanations.

9. Is transparency easy to find?

Responsible brands are usually happy to explain:

  • where they manufacture
  • where materials come from
  • who makes the garments
  • what certifications they hold
  • what chemicals they avoid

If you have to search extensively for this information, that is often a warning sign.

10. Do they educate or simply market?

The most responsible brands spend time helping consumers understand complex issues such as material health, circular design, microplastics and safe chemistry.

Education is usually a stronger sign of genuine commitment than polished marketing campaigns.

How Wellicious Is Different

At Wellicious, we believe sustainability should never be based on vague promises. Every material choice matters.

That is why we do not only focus on the main fabric. We also consider the dyes, sewing threads, labels and every other component of the garment. Our collections are designed using carefully selected materials and are independently verified through Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold, with Material Health certified at Platinum level, demonstrating that material safety has been rigorously assessed.

We manufacture exclusively in Europe, use GOTS certified organic cotton, and incorporate biodegradable stretch fibres only where they are needed. Every product is designed with circularity in mind from the very beginning to the very end of its life. When our customers are finished with their garments, they can return them to us, and we take care of the biodegradation process, ensuring they are safely returned to nature. For us, sustainability is not a marketing campaign. It is the foundation of every decision we make. It is a design philosophy supported by transparency, science and independent certification.

The Bottom Line

Choosing sustainable activewear should not require detective work.

Brands making environmental claims should provide clear, detailed and verifiable information that allows consumers to make informed decisions.

The future of fashion depends on moving beyond attractive marketing towards genuine transparency, safer chemistry and products designed with their entire life cycle in mind.

The more questions we ask, the higher the standard becomes for the entire industry.

Until next time.
