What Are Forever Chemicals?

PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large family of synthetic chemicals that have been widely used in manufacturing since the 1950s.

They are often applied to textiles because they can make fabrics:

These chemicals are extremely persistent and break down very slowly in nature, which is why they are commonly known as "forever chemicals."

Why Are PFAS Used in Activewear?

Many conventional sportswear brands use synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon.

To improve certain performance characteristics, manufacturers have historically applied chemical finishes that can provide water, stain or oil resistance. Some of these finishes have contained PFAS.
