Sustainable Yarns

Every day we get more excited by the increased options for new sustainable fibres in the fashion industry, which herald important changes and innovation in the fashion industry. Currently, the value total fashion market is estimated at 3 trillion dollars and is responsible for 2% of the world's GDP. However, the fashion market is also the 2nd largest polluter in the world economy. Several factors contribute to making the fashion industry so polluting, but one of the main factors is the water needed, both for irrigating plantations of raw materials such as cotton, as well as for the manufacturing process. Additionally, waste water that is full of chemical bleaches, solvents, acids, alkalis, dyes, inks, resins, softeners and fluorocarbons is also very harmful. For all these reasons it is very important to look for alternatives.

At Wellicious we only use organic cotton as it uses far less water than conventionally grown cotton. Also, organic cotton is not treated with pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or genetically modified organisms. These toxins mentioned are not only harmful for farmers and workers, but also for consumers and wildlife. Another fabric which we use is Lyocell. This fibre is made from the natural cellulose found in wood pulp. We especially love Lyocell because it does not use a lot of energy, natural resources, and is is fully biodegradable. Currently, we are looking at other fibres too which are either recyclable or which can be reused. Please watch this space for more information soon!
