What is Mindfulness Meditation?

Mindfulness is one of those expressions that’s bandied around quite a lot, but perhaps a little hard to know exactly what it means. Essentially, it is about aiming to achieve a state of mind that is calm and stable. In fact, such calmness can come naturally to the mind, and with mindfulness all we are really doing is strengthening this innate gift. It also brings a feeling of natural contentment.

One thing to appreciate that it is not about falling asleep, or into any sort of trance. You retain awareness and consciousness.

Creating the right environment

It may sound obvious, but you will help yourself if you have a spot in your home that’s set aside specifically for your mindfulness meditation practice. It should be somewhere you associate with positive rather than negative emotions, and somewhere you are unlikely to be disturbed, especially by noise.

Getting started

To begin with, meditating little but often is a good way to get going, since this is not something that can be forced. If you stick to between 10 and 20 minutes a day to start off with, that would be a good way to start. For example, you could do 10 minutes in the early morning and 10 in the evening.

Posture & gaze

The way you hold yourself will affect your mind and your ability to meditate. Sitting very upright will help you to stay relaxed yet alert. Have a straight spine, with hips and shoulders level. It’s worth double checking your posture if you start to feel sleepy.

Look downwards, concentrating an inch or two in front of your nose. Open your eyes but have a soft gaze – you are not staring.


Notice your breathing. It shouldn’t be forced, but natural. With each breath that goes in and out, you should feel more relaxed.

Mindfulness meditation is simple, something that anyone can achieve and actually a really practical way of being entirely in the moment.
