Evidence yoga may help stroke sufferers

Yoga is many things to many people. Like a lot of enthusiasts, you might have turned to this ancient discipline to boost your fitness or to help you unwind and cope with the pressures of modern life. However, there is also evidence that the activities can help alleviate the symptoms of certain health complaints. For example, if you have limited mobility, it might be a good idea to don your yoga workout clothes and get stuck into the exercises. According to a study conducted by experts at the Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Centre in Indianapolis, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU Bloomington, yoga may benefit stroke patients. They looked into the value of adapted yoga for such people and found that participants demonstrated improved balance and flexibility, as well as a stronger and faster gait and increased strength and endurance. Responding to the findings, rehabilitation research scientist Arlene Schmid, who was principle investigator, noted that loss of functional strength, flexibility and endurance is commonplace in the wake of strokes. She added: “Clinicians need methods to manage and improve these post-stroke physical impairments.” Meanwhile, Tracy Dierks, associate professor of physical therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, added: "The gait findings from our study have the potential to greatly impact clinical practice for gait recovery. The yoga intervention was designed to improve balance, not gait; we did not focus on improving gait at all. Yet we saw major improvements in most clinical gait measurements.” The great thing about yoga is, you can adapt it to suit your needs. Whether you’re keen to increase your mobility, want to boost your general fitness, are seeking some meditative relaxation or are eager to benefit from the social side of classes, you should be able to find the perfect solution for you. There are many different styles of the discipline for you to consider, and as long as you do your research and sign up to a version that ticks all of your boxes, you should be more than happy with the results.
