Yoga is great for body and mind

It's no surprise that so many people around the world are unfurling their yoga exercise mats and getting stuck into the discipline. This can be a great way for people to boost their fitness levels, helping them to gain strength and  flexibility.Meanwhile, yoga's also associated with a range of mental benefits. For example, it can reduce stress levels and help people cope with the challenges they face. It has also been suggested that taking part in exercises like this may help people to fend off cognitive decline as they age. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona studied 926 people between the ages of 70 and 93 who had completed questionnaires about their lifestyle over the previous year. They found that those who took part in moderate exercise and used a computer were less likely to suffer memory problems that can be a precursor to dementia. As well as yoga, moderate exercise was deemed to include activities like brisk walking, hiking, aerobics, strength training and swimming, among other things. Responding to the findings, Dr Marie Janson of Alzheimer's Research UK said: "This study adds to the growing evidence that lifestyle factors may have an impact on our cognition as we age. The research suggests that keeping our bodies and our brains active in later life could have combined benefits in helping to stave off cognitive decline, and it would be interesting to see if the volunteers were also protected against dementia." She went on to note that further research is needed before more certain conclusions can be drawn.
