What’s Inside Your Yoga and Activewear? The Hidden Truth About the Clothes You Wear

From synthetic fibres and microplastics to PFAS and potentially harmful chemicals, understanding what your yoga and activewear is made of matters more than you might think.

When you pull on your favourite leggings or sports bra, you probably think about comfort, fit and performance. But have you ever stopped to consider what is actually inside the fabric touching your skin?

At Wellicious, we believe what you wear during your yoga practice or workout should support your wellbeing without compromising your values. That starts with looking beyond how your clothes look and feel.

The problem with synthetic fibres

Much of today’s yoga and activewear is made from synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon and elastane. These materials are derived primarily from fossil fuels and can release tiny plastic particles, known as microplastics, during washing and everyday wear.

These particles can enter waterways and contribute to environmental pollution. Synthetic fabrics can also contain chemical additives, dyes and finishing treatments, depending on how they are manufactured.

While synthetic fibres can offer stretch, durability and moisture management, their environmental footprint and chemical composition deserve closer attention.

What about PFAS and toxic chemicals?

PFAS, sometimes called “forever chemicals”, are a large group of substances used in certain products to provide properties such as water and stain resistance. They have attracted growing concern because many PFAS are highly persistent in the environment, and some are associated with adverse health effects.

Not all yoga and activewear contains PFAS, but certain textile treatments may use them. Other substances of concern can also be present in textile production, depending on the materials, dyes and manufacturing processes involved.

This is why it is important to look beyond marketing claims. Words such as “natural”, “clean” or “eco-friendly” do not automatically mean a garment is free from unwanted chemicals. Take a look at our recent article on the new EU Greenwashing Laws here to understand more.

What does non-toxic yoga and activewear really mean?

Non-toxic yoga and activewear is about making informed choices regarding the materials, chemical inputs and manufacturing processes used to create your clothes. Independent certification and credible testing can help provide evidence beyond a brand’s promises.

At Wellicious, we take this responsibility seriously. Our yoga and activewear is designed with a focus on material health and circularity. Our Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold credentials reflect a commitment to more responsible product design, while our European manufacturing approach supports our focus on quality and transparency.

Your skin deserves thoughtful choices

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and clothing sits against it for hours at a time, often while you sweat and move. Although exposure depends on the garment and the substances involved, choosing thoughtfully made clothing is a practical step towards a more considered wardrobe.

Your yoga and activewear should work as hard as you do - without unnecessary compromises.

Look beyond the label. Ask questions about fabrics (read about Wellicious fabrics here), chemical safety and certification. Because what goes into your clothes matters just as much as how they make you feel.

Hasta la próxima,

El equipo de Wellicious
