Chinese Secrets of Health

Filed under: Nutrition — Wellicious @ 7:31 pm

Today we would like to give you some tips on how to balance diet in a Chinese-style way achieving the fine balance between yin and yang.

To maintain harmony with the natural world the body must match nature’s cycles by eating with the seasons:

Spring is the ideal season for detoxifying a congested liver in preparation for the hot summer months. Greens are a traditional part of the spring diet in most cultures; their use is associated with freshening, cleansing and rebuilding the body.

You should eat fresh fruits, green vegetables, asparagus, corn, wheat, celery, cucumber, berries, lemons, sour plums, yoghurt, limes, pickles, brown rice, nuts, seeds and dandelion.

For summer you need cooling and bitter fruit- and vegetable- based foods and drinks. Foods should be lightly cooked (think boiling, steaming and stir frying) and the diet packed with cooling foods like fruits, salad greens, cucumber, lemons, seed and mint.

Chicken and dairy products should be restricted. Have grains, broccoli, spinach, apricots, peaches, cherries, salad greens, cucumber, lemons, limes, cayenne, ginger, lemongrass, mint and seeds.

Autumn: Foods like fish, vegetables, olive oil and stronger tasting warming foods such as meat, eggs and dairy products combined with longer cooking methods (baking and roasting) help draw energy into the food to heat the body. Eat root vegetable (potatoes, yams, squashes, carrots, onions), spinach, nuts, beans, seeds, garlic, ginger, meats, dairy products (including eggs), mangoes and bananas.

Winter is traditionally a time for soups, stews and casseroles, Winter meals require garlic, ginger and cayenne pepper to add warmth to the body. Cooked whole grains served with lentils or beans are excellent winter staples. Have baked and roasted dishes, soups, stews, meats, turnips, seaweed, mushrooms, squashes, melons and salt (sea salt, soy sauce).

Explore and enjoy your new Chinese diet!

We Love Chinese Dumplings

Filed under: Nutrition — Wellicious @ 5:39 pm

Hands down my favourite highend dumplings are at the traditional chinese restaurant Royal China in London. However, if you are in Shanghai you just have to try the delicious dumplings at Whampoa Club, an opulent Art Deco restaurant on the Bund. Dumplings are healthy and cooked in either soup or water. China has been perfecting the art of dumpling making since the Sung dynasty. Chinese dumplings may be round or crescent-shaped, boiled or pan-fried. The filling may be sweet or savory; vegetarian or filled with meat and vegetables. General health rule is to go for soup dumplings, the deepfried and rice dumplings are best left for occasional treats.

Stay Fertile Longer

Your fertility will start to decline at 35, but you can adjust your way of eating to improve it.

- Eat organic! Try to eat as many raw foods as possible -at least 50%. Raw foods are rich in enzymes and amino acids which boost fertility.

- Drink! Being dehydrated can speed the aging process. Try to drink lots of water, fresh juices and herbal teas.

- Choose unrefined oils like olive oil, sunflower oil, and grape seed oil to flavor your salads and food.

- Eat freshwater  fish like trout rather than deep-sea fish such as tuna, which may contain mercury.

- Eat spouted grains like alfalfa, lentils and chickpeas as they are high in rich enzymes and amino acids.

- Eat yam and sweet potato. They contain a natural form of the hormone progesterone.

- Eat nuts and seeds as they are packed with fertility nutrients.

The 9 most important spices for harmony and energy

Filed under: Nutrition, Wellbeing — Wellicious @ 9:04 pm

These seasonings will take you through cold and dark days:

- Chilly boosts and stimulates your blood circulation and releases the body’s endorphins. Great for body and soul.

- Cumin calms you down and supports your digestive system.

- Green Pepper is medium hot, refreshing and supports the protein digestion. It also warms you up and increases your concentration.

- Ginger is especially during winter important to increase your body’s defences. It also helps to feel less bloated. You can have a quick and easy ginger drink, just pour hot water on a piece of peeled ginger and let it brew for a couple of minutes.

- Nutmeg is popular in mashed potato, but use it after your dish is ready cooked! Nutmeg strengthens your liver, lowers elevated blood lipids and lifts your spirits.

- Saffron is ideal for autumn and winter; it balances your mood and metabolism, warms you up and helps to relieve stress.

- Black pepper with the same effects like green pepper, in case you like it hot!

- Vanilla is not only suitable for sweets, but also for fish or poultry it quickens the appetite, supports your digestive system and increases your power of concentration.

- Cinnamon is anyway perfect for Christmas but also warms you up, supports your digestion and is invigorating.
